Don
joined the Navy in 1942 as a seaman and worked up to first class. He was
a gunner on a 20mm and then during service battles worked on an 8"
turret. In San Francisco he was put on board the heavy cruiser U.S.S.
San Francisco.
He went to the Aleutian Islands in Alaska, Marshall and Gilbert Islands
down south near Australia. He was at Philippine Liberation, Tinian, Saipan,
Guam, Rhoda, Gilbert Islands, Truk Islands and China Sea. We accepted
the Japanese surrender of Korea.
In 1945 he came home and spent 3 years in the Birmingham VA Hospital
in Van Nuys, California where he had 7 ribs removed and a permanent collapsed
lung all brought on by TB acquired while in the service.
Don
received 11 Bronze Stars.
